Why Does Insomnia Often Become a Cycle?

Do you find yourself feeling exhausted all day but suddenly alert once it is finally time to sleep? Do you start worrying about whether you will be able to fall asleep, checking the clock during the night, or replaying conversations in your mind once your head hits the pillow?

Many people with insomnia begin developing anxiety about sleep itself. Over time, bed becomes associated with frustration, wakefulness, or stress rather than rest.

The harder someone tries to force sleep, the more alert and anxious they often become. CBT-I helps interrupt these cycles so sleep can begin to feel more natural again.

What Is CBT-I?

CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the consensus first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in adults according to the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Unlike sleep medications, CBT-I addresses the thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep.

Treatment includes:

  • Incorporating daily routines and habits that benefit sleep

  • Rebuilding a strong connection between your bed and sleeping

  • Adjusting your sleep schedule to help restore and strengthen your body’s natural drive for sleep

  • Reshaping unhelpful beliefs about sleep

  • Relaxation strategies that help calm the nervous system
